I wanted to capture that exact moment in my mind, forever knowing that I could look back with crystal clarity and draw upon it. Bottling up the sights and sounds, absorbing the intangible essence of camaraderie that simply can't be described with mere words. It was a surreal moment.

These people are my friends and my companions. They are my inspiration and my energy. I begin each day by reading their words, and end each night wrapped in the knowledge that we share a similar bond. Imaginary Internet Friends? Maybe. But they are more real to me in the few days or mere moments I am lucky enough to be around them than are many of the people who I have known personally for years."
- from my notes this past weekend

I'm getting ahead of myself though.

I departed Calgary Thursday morning on only one hour of sleep, too excited the night before to shut down and simply relax. My flight connected through Los Angeles without issue and I arrived in Vegas at 2:15 in the afternoon. In my opinion it is preferable arriving at night, the lights of the city stirring a sense of excitement and anticipation for what is to come before you even get off the plane. However I had to settle for the sight of palm trees and cowboys, both in extreme abundance between the airport and the Strip, but admittedly only one of which that really excited me. (For the record, if you guessed the one with Stetsons you would be incorrect - what can I say, I am from Calgary, cowboys we have.)

After securing my car I drove to the Imperial Palace, thanking the heavens that (for the first time in my history of staying there) I was checked in without fuss or incident. Though I desperately wanted a long, luxurious nap (of the 12-hour variety) I had pre-arranged plans to meet with Richard 'Quiet Lion' Brodie that evening for drinks, so I settled for a 10-minute power snooze before showering away the rest of my sleepiness.

Richard phoned and we agreed to meet at the Wynn. He and Michael Craig, author, of course, of The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King (no, not an affiliate link) had dinner reservations at Okada for 8pm, and since it was a bit later than we had originally scheduled to meet they were gracious enough to include me in their plans. That was an unexpected surprise for me, but a very welcome one.

The dinner itself was exquisite. After meeting the lovely sommelier, Richard and I shared a bottle of Ginga Shizuku - Divine Droplets Sake - served chilled in a beautiful presentation of crystal ware. Because I already ate a few hours prior I wasn't exceptionally hungry, but am fortunate they insisted I try enough samples from the endless stream of platters brought to our table. I realize this isn't a food blog but it would be a disservice not to recreate that meal just a little, so please indulge me for a moment as I recollect. The sushi and sashimi were beautiful works or art, set on a platter artfully decorated along with the expected accompaniments of wasabi and ginger. Among the many dishes we received was a sampling of Robatayaki which also wonderful, including such items as sea bass, asparagus with bacon, organic chicken, and BBQ pork that simply melted the moment they touched your mouth. The final item I had was a miniature taro taco shell, which I believe was filled with blue fin tuna, though I can't be completely sure. Simply outstanding.

Yes, the food was amazing, but the dinner conversation was also stellar. These two can certainly tell stories, and I had a great time simply sitting back, sipping my sake and listening to them recount many of the adventures that the rest of us only read about in their blogs or books. After dinner we relaxed on the show terrace and sipped scotch while they enjoyed cigars, all the while watching a larger-than-life animatronic frog sitting high above a 100-ft screen dance around to War's Low Rider. Seriously, only in Vegas. Though the two of them will come up again a few times in my recap, I'd like to send out a special thanks now to Richard and Michael once again for including me for dinner and drinks, I really did have a great time.

Picking up the crew

I had arranged to meet Kat, Gary, and Maudie at the airport, and was very much looking forward to getting us all in the same place together. I met Maudie last year at the event but it was my first time seeing Kat and Gary live, though we talk to each other most every night. It took mere minutes, no - mere seconds to feel like we have known each other in person for years. To further solidify the bond, we were forced to walk around the airport parkade for a while in Seinfeld-esque fashion since I neglected to notice where I parked, so excited was I to finally meet them all. Fortunately Gary was resourceful enough to locate the car and we were off in search of further misadventures at the Hôtel de Débauche.

After arriving back at the IP we found the meet & greet organized by Pauly to still be in full swing - and continued that way until the sun was up. I find it hard to convey the feeling of just sitting amongst these people, but let me assure you they are the best group of alcohol-swilling, junk-grabbing, hammer-dropping degenerates you are likely to ever meet. As anyone new to these events will attest, all you have to do is introduce yourself once and before long you are known to everyone. Since I have been in attendance before, I relived the experience through those that were there for the first time - it is simply displayed on their faces. A mixed look of pure astonishment, happiness, amazement, and a true sense of contentment knowing they belong.

That, my friends, was just Thursday. More to follow shortly.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Return From Vegas, Trip Reports Coming

Filed under: Bloggers, Trip Reports, Las Vegas
Unless you are:

a.) a first time visitor to this (or any other poker-related) site,
-or-
b.) have been living in a cave

then I am sure you know the World Poker Blogger Tour invaded Las Vegas this past weekend. Trust me when I say that "invaded" is the correct term.

Since it was after midnight Monday (well, Tuesday morning) when my plane finally touched back down on Canadian soil, I haven't had a chance to finish compiling my notes from this weekend. In fact I broke tradition and didn't write much down at all, so I will be relying a lot on memory which could make it a rather <strike>fuzzy</strike> long process.

I'll be working on that and a few other things today as my system readjusts to coffee being the daytime beverage staple of choice (rather than beer/greyhounds/bloody mary's), but in the meantime check out Hoy's latest Hot Hand series if you haven't done so already:

Hot Hand -- Flopping a Set in NLH Cash Game
Hot Hand -- Flopping a Set in NLH Cash Game Part II
Hot Hand -- Flopping a Set in NLH Cash Game Part III
Hot Hand -- Flopping a Set in NLH Cash Game Part IV
Hot Hand -- Flopping a Set in NLH Cash Game Part V

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Vegas Bound

Filed under: Bloggers, Trip Reports, Las Vegas
By the time most of you read this, I will be at 35,000 heading down to the land of bright lights and desert nights. Unfortunately the weather is going to come up short of tropical, but it is still miles better than the Canadian climate I'm used to in December. In case you aren't aware, I am heading down for the 3rd Annual WPBT (World Poker Blogger Tour) Winter Classic. I was in attendance last year, though a bout of pnemonia hit me and I only got to experience a tiny portion of the fun. This year I am flu-free (knock on wood) and plan to take full advantage of that fact.

On Saturday we will be playing a tournament amongst ourselves, with an $80 buy-in and $50 rebuy option. Nice stakes considering there should be a fairly high number of entrants. I also have a few other things I am working on while down there so check back for trip reports, tourney details, poker thoughts and whatever else I can come up with. Now I just hope the wireless works at the hotel better than the last time I was there!

For any of you who are going, I look forward to seeing you in a few short hours!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Heading To Vegas

Filed under: Trip Reports, Las Vegas
This morning I am leaving for Las Vegas on an eleven-day trip. The bad news is four of those days are spent driving, however that still gives me seven days to enjoy Sin City.

Much to my chagrin, I'm not playing in the Five-Star at Bellagio, though Iwill definitely be stopping by to check out the action so be sure to check back for pictures and updates on thetournament and the players.

I'll be posting regularly from the trip and will hopefully have lots of pokergoodness, Vegas news, and card room information to share.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

World Poker Tour Invitational, Day One

Filed under: Bloggers, Trip Reports, Tournaments, World Poker Tour, No Limit Texas Hold'em
If Maxim did a poker issue, it would be this tournament: the room is filled with bigcelebrities, beautiful models, and virtually every poker pro you could imagine. The atmosphere is more like a partythan any other tourney I've ever played, and everyone is having a good time.

At the end of day one, thereare 98 players left. I am in 68th, with T17500, which is just about half of the average stack of T32000. BJ has a complete listof the players and their stacks over at PokerPages, and of course Pauly hasthe best live blog on the Internets, which includes a ton of pictures.

I don't have many exciting tales of myown to tell, because I was severely card dead for most of the tourney. I swear to jeebus, if the object of the game wasto get 93o, I would have too many bracelets to count, man.

I don't think I ever lost a hand, which waspretty nice, and the hands that I won paid off nicely. A couple I remember: early on, I was in the BB with Q7o. It wasfolded to the SB, who completed, so I checked and we saw a flop of AQx. I knew he'd only call a bet with an ace, and Iwanted to know if my queen was good. I decided that if he called, I was done with the hand. I bet about 1/2 the pot,and he called, so I was finished . . . until a queen hit the turn. Now I knew I was way ahead. I put him on a mediumace, and figured that he probably did the same. The turn went check check, and he checked the river. I bet just underthe size of the pot, with a "I have a weak ace and I hope to scare you away" sort of bet, and he said,"well, I'm going to see if I out-kick you," as he called. "I have a queen," I said, "and theace is my kicker."

He laughed, and mucked. "Oh man! I didn't see that coming!"

I also limped into a pot from the button with JTo. The flop gave me a OESD with the Qs-9x-Xs and s out. A coupleof pre-flop limpers checked to me, so I made a semi-bluff of about 2/3 of the pot, and got called by the Big blind, whowas an extremely smart and solid player. The turn was the Ks, and I picked up a whole bunch of outs. In fact, I pickedup so many outs, I made a loose call when he bet 1/2 the pot, even though I knew I wasn't getting any more money out ofhim if I made my hand. I spiked the As on the river to make the A-high flush, and bet the pot.

"Nicecatch," he said, flashing me a red king as he folded.

Even though I won the hand, I think it was theonly hand I played poorly. I had a ton of outs, but if I'd missed, it would have hurt.

Jason Alexander wasmoved to my table, which also featured Tom Everett Scott (who finished third in this last year) and Mike Sexton. Jasonwas so cool, and so funny, and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. About two hands after he sat down, he said to me,"Hey, Wil!"

I should point out that we've never met.

"I almost didn't recognizeyou," he said. "Stand By Me is one of my favorite movies of all time, man."

The one seatsmacked the felt. "That's where I knew you from!"

I should also point out that the one seat wasAllen Kessler.

Jason and I mixed it up a few times, and I took a couple of large-ish pots from him. Onetime, I open-raised from MP with presto, hoping my tightness would let me end the hand right there, but Jason calledand we saw a flop of A-5-x. As Vince Van Patten would say, "there are fireworks going off in Wil's head now, Mike!He has to hope that Jason made a hand with that ace."

I checked, hoping to induce a bluff that wouldallow me to check-raise for the benefit of the entire table, but Jason checked behind me. Damn! The turn was the ten ofclubs, which was a little scary if he was playing KQ, so I bet about 2/3 of the pot. Jason thought for a minute, andcalled.

The river is a queen, so the board is A-5-x-T-Q. Now I have to wonder if Jason has KJ, and I'mfucked. I've seen him play cards like that before, but I've also seen him play KQ and KT. I also know that he has togive me credit for a real hand here. I think for a second, and decide that he doesn't have KJ, because I don't think hecalls my bet on the turn with a gutshot and king-high.

"Well, Jason, if you've got me, you've gotme." I said, as I pushed the rest of my chips in. I think there was about 2800 or 3000 in the pot, and my stackwas only about 8000 or so.

Jason went into the tank for so long, I knew I was ahead. "I don't know if Ido, Wil," he said. I put him on KT. He sighed, and mucked his cards. "I think you bluffed me out of thatpot," he said.

That is exactly what I wanted you and everyone else at this table to think, Ithought.

A level or so later, Jason limped from EP, and it was folded to me in the SB. I had pocket eights,so I raised. I'd seen him play a lot of big over cards, and I knew that if I could get heads-up with him, I couldprobably outplay him. It was folded back to Jason, and he called. The flop came out A-5-5 rainbow. Aw, shit.

In a nano-second, something Heather and I talked about a few weeks ago flashed through my mind: What would I doif this flop hit me? I'd check, of course. So play it that way. If he bets, you know you're beat and you're done. If hechecks, you may be able to take it away later in the hand. I checked, and he checked behind me. The turn wasanother ace, reducing the chances of Jason holding an ace. I looked up at him, and everything about him said that hehated this board. I can't explain what it was, or how I knew, it was just something that Blinked into my mind. Icontinued to represent the ace I hoped he thought I had, so I checked. He checked behind again. The river was acomplete blank, and I bet out about 1/2 the pot, which is exactly what I'd do with an ace there. I figured the only wayhe was calling was if he had the ace, and I was pretty sure he'd fold any other pair, up to jacks.

"Areyou bluffing me again, Wil?" He said.

"Probably," I said. I looked right at the board andimagined stacking his chips.

He sighed. "I don't think you are. Good hand."

He mucked, and I raked in another good-sized pot. I heard my brother's voice in my head: "You're killing IndependentGeorge!"

A little bit later, this sweet girl named Marissa moved to our table. I guess she's onthe TV show Stacked. She didn't have many chips, and the pros took what littleshe had by moving against her on the flop, pretty much regardless of their cards. She had never played poker beforelast night, and though she was in over her head with these guys, she was clearly having fun, and even said that she wasjust looking for a good hand to bust out on, so she could go out with some dignity.

Allen eventually bustedher with 93o vs. her A-little, when he paired his three. She was a really sweet girl, and we were all sad to see hergo. Especially when her seat was filled by John Juanda.

Some of you may have read that I busted John. Thisis true, but it's not as exciting or masterful as you may think. John was crippled when Jason flopped Broadway for thenuts, and John made aces up on the turn. A few hands later, Daniel Negreanu came running over to our table with someguy I didn't recognize, and said to John, "Can you eat ten Saltines in sixty seconds?"

"What?" John said, and everyone else at the table thought.

"Saltine crackers. Can you eatten of them in sixty seconds?"

John thought for a second while he looked at his cards.

"Yeah, I think I can," he said.

"Okay!" Daniel said, with a little hop. "Juandais my horse! You get half my action, John."

"Let's do it!" John said, and shoved his last1000 or so into the pot. It was folded to me, and I figured that the BB and I were calling based strictly on odds andprobably checkint it down. That is, until I woke up with pocket aces.

"I have to raise," I said. While I thought about what amount would get the BB to maybe call with something that I could survive, he folded J2oface up.

"Go ahead and play it out," he said. "I'm not playing this."

Iflipped up my aces, and John flipped up KQ. I flopped an ace, busted John Juanda, and ended up with about 16K after thewhole thing was said and done. John and I shook hands, and the WPT cameras captured the whole thing. Daniel was puttingon quite a show for them, calling for cards and stuff, and it was pretty funny, so it stands a good chance of makingthe broadcast, especially if I make it deep today.

I went back to being card dead, until I found A2h in theBB. It was folded around to Allen Kessler, who completed. Allen had been playing very aggressively, and had stolen aton of my blinds. My M was pretty low at this level, though, and I wasn't taking this hand to war, so I just checked, hoping to get some help from the flop.

The flop came out Ax-Kx-Qh. I checked, and Allen bet about the sizeof the pot. I had to stop and think for a minute. Did he have an ace? I guess he would limp with a weak ace, but thatseemed very unlikely, based on his aggressive play. Did he have a king? Maybe he had a king, and I could beat that withmy weakest of aces. Does he have a jack, and he's on a draw?

"You're thinking about this so long, youhave a piece of that flop," he said.

"I do," I said, " and so do you."

Ialmost folded, until I recalled something Iread on Columbo's blog last week: what's the story of my hand? What's the story I'm telling? In other words, whatdoes he think I have? He can't possibly put me on an ace here, because he knows I'd probably pop him pre-flop if I hadone, right? And I think he raises with an ace, which means he paired his king or his queen, and I'm almost certainlyahead in the hand, even with my pathetic kicker.

My M was shitty, and I knew that if I just called he maybe able to outplay me later in the hand. I also knew that if I raised, I was committed until the end, so I wanted toput my chips in when I was pretty sure I was ahead. I jammed.

"I'm all-in," I said.

Hejumped a little in his seat, like he'd touched a live wire or something. "Well, I guess you're serious," hesaid. He thought for a minute, and showed a queen as he folded.

"Your king was good there," theplayer between us (who I later found out owns Bay101 in San Jose) said. I was proud of myself, and grateful to Columbofor the post on his blog, which put what is essentially level 3 thinking (what does he think I have, and what does hethink I think he has?) into terms I was able to understand and apply to my game.

Shortly after that hand, our table broke, and Allen and I were moved to a table with Jon Favreau and Barry Greenstein. Jon was all-in, and Barrycalled as we sat down. John Kelley also called, and they saw a queen-high flop as I stacked my chips and set Darwin onthe table. John Kelley pushed, and Barry called. John turned up AQ for TPTK, and Barry turned up AA. Jon Favreau sighedand turned up 44.

"This is sofa king cool," I thought to myself. "I get to watchBarry Greenstein bust two players with aces!"

The turn was a blank, and the river was . . . a four.I don't know who was more shocked, Barry or Jon. I've watched Barry play a lot of poker on TV, and I've never seen himsteam, but he looked as close to pissed as I've ever seen. It was a brutal suckout, and the poker gods paid Jon back onthe very next hand when all the money went in pre-flop between Jon and one of the hosts of Live at the Bike, (eitherDavid or Bart. I can't remember, because it was after midnight at this point. Sorry, David or Bart!). Jon had AKo vs.ATs. The flop came K-high, but a Ten on the turn took away about 1/2 of Jon's stack.

"Theriver giveth, but the turn taketh away," I thought. Then, "Okay, you're getting punchy becauseyou're tired, and this is when you make stupid mistakes. Settle down, tough guy, and stay focused."

I didn't get involved in any hands at that table, which broke quickly, and sent me to Table 19, which was aseriously terrifying table: David Williams, Evelyn Ng, Alan Gohering, and my 2005 WSOP nemesis, Paul Darden, who lookedat me like a one-night stand he'd completely forgotten about.

My M was about 6.5, and with only the finalsix players making the money in this tourney, I decided that I was going to double up or go home, but I'd do it smart,so I folded for about fifteen minutes, until I found AQo in EP. I open-pushed, got no callers, and that was it for theday.

I bagged up my T17500, which I knew was way below average and meant I'd have to play very fast today, but I didn't care about that. Even though I was mostly card-dead, I played very smart poker yesterday. I stayed out oftrouble, let the other players beat up on each other, always got my money in ahead, and made the most of the cards Idid pick up. I never tried to get cute or too clever, and I can honestly say that I played to the very best of myability. The fact that I have nearly twice my starting stack, despite the epic string of lousy cards I got, issomething I'm very proud of.

I drove home to the sounds of Underworld's AHundredDaysOff, and didn't fallasleep until after 3am.

I go back to Commerce today at 6. Here's my draw, courtesy of PokerWire:

Seat 1: Steve Lipscomb $47,900
Seat 2: Amnon Filippi$34,700
Seat 3: Wil Wheaton $17,500
Seat 4: Scott Fischman $94,600
Seat 5: Tom Lock $34,600
Seat 6:Adriano Zimonyi $47,300
Seat 7: Coley Laffoon $61,300
Seat 8: Judson Swimner $58,600
Seat 9: Blair Rodman$25,900

I actually like this draw a lot. I know what I have to do with my chips, and there are big enoughstacks (*cough* Scott Fishman *cough*) to take shots at busting me if I pick up a decent pushing hand. It's also niceto know that I start out the day with just two moves: push or fold.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

More L.A. Maybe you need to dodge all the spades, oronly an ace. Maybe you need to catch a miracle, and pick up the case seven so your hammer bluff makes quads, beeetches,to beat your opponent's turned flush. (Who the fuck does he think he is, calling your huge pre-flop raise with T6canyway and with two sevens on the board? What did he think you had?!)

The card comes off . . . and you lose.Maybe you stare at the board for a second, maybe you're already standing up, maybe you're so steamed, you even take afew steps away from the table before you remember to go back and shake the hand of your worthy opponent who outplayedor outdrew you.

What do you do next? If you're me, you congratulate your opponent, wish everyone good luck, and on your way to the bar, you pick up your cell phone, and call someone who won't charge you a dollar to hear yourbad beat story, or who understands you (and the game) enough to listen, and say the magical words that somehow sootheyour wounds.

There are a few people I call: PokerGeek, Lee Jones, Nickerson, Dr. Pauly. They fit all theabove criteria (though Lee still charges me for my bad beat stories. In fact, I lost my entire stack. I was playing $1/$2 No Limit at the MGM in LasVegas.

The table was full of fish and a couple of locals. I folded a bunch of hands early on and tried topay attention to the table action and how the players bet their hands.

After a few orbits, I looked down tosee Pocket Jacks on the button. Someone raised it up to $10 preflop when the action came to me. I decided to see whereI was at and re-raised it to $40. The guy in the Big Blind called but the original raiser folded.

I figuredthe cold caller in the BB had big cards. I knew he didn't have a pocket pair. I saw him re-raise a few potsearlier in the session with both medium and low pocket pairs preflop. I also gave him credit for not cold calling a bigraise with rags. Defending your big blind for $40 with rags seemed even beyond this guy's poor play. Since hedidn't re-raise me, I figured I was good especially if rags hit the board.

The flop came down:3s-6c-Jh.

As you might expect, I was excited to see this flop. I knew I had my opponent beat even withoutthe set. To make things better, it was a rainbow flop.

The table seemed pretty loose to me especially thisguy, so I knew the best way to attack my opponent and play this hand was to bet after he checked. I figured he'dthink I was button raising him. He was probably going to call me anyway.

This guy played a lot of hands at my table. I saw him call several big raises then fold on the turn. Ifigured he would do the same to me. I bet out on the flop and he called.

Since I put him on big cards, hehad no real draw on the flop. All he could possibly get was a runner runner straight or flush. I knew this guy wasfishy enough to call and that's what I wanted. I bet the pot and he called like I suspected but he thought for areally long time before he acted. Did he have two pair? Who cares, right? I have him beat anyway.

The turn card was an 8h. Having a set with a flush draw on the board is alwaysscary. I bet the pot again and my opponent quickly called. I knew immediately what he had now.

Hecalled way too fast during this betting round. My initial suspicions were looking to be right. I figured he had Kh-Qhor Kh-Th. He looked like the type of guy who would cold call a big raise with that type of hand.

The onlycard I didn't want to see on the river was a heart. Of course, the 2 of hearts fell. I looked down at my stackand it was almost gone. I should've moved all in on the turn for sure. I bet the river and he called.

I flipped over my set and one of the old guys at the table goes . . . "I bethe runner runnered his flush on you." He did. The kid slow rolled me too and flipped over Kh-Qh. Damn!

A friend of mine mentioned shortly after the hand that I should've moved all in on the flop. He said,"That's the only way to beat a guy like that. The casinos are full ofreally loose No Limit players and calling stations. You have to push those players off the pot early."

I guess the question is . . . win a small pot on the flop or risk losing a big one on the river? I was alittle stunned when I lost this hand but I got over it quickly. It definitely hurts when you lose a hand like this. Ifast played it too!

I read the guy correctly and the percentages were greatly in my favor but I still lostthe hand. I lost my entire stack too. You know what that means, right? REBUY on table7!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

WPBT Winter Classic - The Live Tournament

Filed under: Bloggers, Trip Reports, Tournaments, Casinos & Card Rooms

There are dozens of WPBT Las Vegas trip reports trickling in throughout the blogosphere, and the common phrase among them is "words just can't explain what it was like." Truer words have never been spoken. I find myself at a complete loss while attempting to recount the feeling of simply just being there.

The sheer talent at the tables was staggering. At times I felt it could have been the Bellagio Five Diamond Classic across the street that I was sitting at, rather than the Imperial Palace amongst my friends, my peers, my heroes and my partners in crime. Often I found myself just sitting back observing everything and everyone, trying to etch it all into my mind so I wouldn't forget a single sound, voice, action or emotion.

Poker tables were set up in a roped-off area in the center of the room, banquet rounds were available for those eating or drinking, and tables were set up at the entryway for registration and to display the generous gifts donated for the event. There was also an open bar set up in the room, but that didn't interest anyone attending this event. We were all there to play some serious poker. Ah hell, who am I trying to kid. The open bar was a great touch and was highly frequented by everyone - which is just a nice way of saying that half the room was loaded by noon.

Several fantastic pre-tournament speakers shared their thoughts and insights with us prior to the game, including Barry Greenstein, Charlie Shoten, and Michael Craig. Thanks to all the readers for bearing with us this week as we descended upon Vegas and weren't able to post a great amount of content on the site. We will be back in full force again tomorrow though.

Also, a really quick thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting over this past week. There is never enough time to get to know everyone, but I am glad that I was able to (at the very least) put faces to most of the names I have known for so long. I'll be back tomorrow!

Once settled in, we headed downstairs to meet up with the other early arrivers - the hilarious Falstaff, the infamous Grubby, and the Blogfather himself - Iggy.

For those reading this that have played online poker against these people before, I am sure you have some pre-conceived notion about who they are and what they are like in person. The highlight was definitely listening to Iggy and Grubby recount their attempt to find Iggy's hotel room. While some of us were placed on the 14th and 18th floors, they stuck Iggy far down in the depths of the dungeons in a single-digit room, well away from the rest of civilization. Someone must have warned them about him in advance, and he has been wreaking havoc ever since.

We headed back to the IP where they were good enough to open a blogger table for us. We played a seven-hour marathon 1/2 NL poker session, and even had some cowboys in town for the rodeo sit down and donate to our cause. Iggy was bound and determined to get us kicked out of the poker room on our first night, so before long we were all dropping 'f-bombs', receiving multiple warnings from the floor staff. No matter how hard we tried though, we couldn't seem to get kicked out. Eventually we gave up and headed over to the lounge at the sportsbook, where I claimed the title of rock, paper, scissors champion before heading upstairs to sleep - at 11am.

Coming up next: Day two on two hours of sleep

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mini Trip Report from Commerce Casino

Filed under: Bloggers, Trip Reports, Casinos & Card Rooms, Texas Holdem
A one-armed
Chinese man, a drug dealer wearing a gaudy gold Virgin of Guadelupe pendant on a gaudy gold rope, and Shane
Nickerson.

Yeah, it's just another night in the $100 NL game at Commerce.

Shane, I've decided, has the worst luck in the universe. I watched him
lose a buy-in to a donkey who called him all the way down with an
underpair, only to catch her one-outer on the river to bust his flopped top two pair. I also saw him
lose a buy-in to the guy we're pretty sure was a drug dealer n Shane
flopped a set of nines against the his pocket queens, and the villain
caught running clubs to make a flush. Aiyah!

When I got home, I wrote to Shane:

The Flush Suckout Guy has this great set of speakers in his van that he can sell you, straight from the factory. I think he has some designer cologne, too, but he may have to run around the corner to pick it up.

Shane wrote back:

That guy writes himself, man.

Indeed, he did. His fingernails were stained black, the same color as his black Los Angeles Dodgers cap. His huge adam's apple pushed out against two or three days worth of stubble. His blue eyes were bloodshot and pinned, and when he walked up to the table, he bounced his head around, pealed a one hundred dollar bill off a thick gangster roll from his pocket, and said, "Yeah-heah-heah-ha-ha-hah-heaaah!" He was one of the worst players I've ever seen, and that wad of bills came out of his pocket for several rebuys while I was there.

While it's very convenient to play online, one of the major benefits of playing live poker is seeing characters like Suckout Guy and One Armed Man. Shane and I also saw a guy in a floor-length oilskin duster who had a Texas Rangers star to accompany the feather on his fedora, as well as a gaggle of outrageously hot girls in too-tight cowboy shirts. (As if there's such a thing!) The guy in the 8 seat at our table said he took the SAT with me at Granada Hills High about sixteen years ago, and at one point stacked up over $500 in front of him by making boat-over-boat.

The game down there is extremely loose, and if you're not careful, you will get killed by some jerk who calls your fifteen dollar pre-flop raise (the blinds are 2 and 3) with a raggedy ace and ends up making two pair on the turn to bust your AK. So I played outrageously tight, raising with Group I and II hands only, and only limping with all other pocket pairs or medium suited connectors if I could get in late with at least two limpers ahead of me. I didn't play many hands, but I got paid off twice with pocket queens and a successful continuation bet with AQ when a king hit the flop. I played for about three hours, and I left $53 to the good after tokes and blinds. Not great, but better than losing, and when is the last time you got to say that you played with a one-armed man?

Yeah-heah-heah-ha-ha-hah-heaaah!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

In the Money at the Casino Morongo

Filed under: Trip Reports, Casinos & Card Rooms, Texas Holdem

Following my disappointing week of online tournaments, I was tilting - hard. In an attempt to revive myself and regain my mojo, I headed for the desert. Palm Springs to be exact. As soon as I saw the windmills on the 10 freeway I felt my excitement bubble with the prospect of a relaxing (and hopefully profitable) weekend.

First stop, Casino Morongo poker room. (It should be noted that it truly was my first stop, as I had yet to even check into the resort where I was staying.) I got there just in time to register for the Saturday morning tournament. I specifically wanted to play this tournament as I had heard it really was a mixed bag of good, decent and just plain terrible players. A good poker player needs to be able to play against all skill levels and I have yet to figure out how to win against inexperienced players. Hence my newfound interest in playing smaller, more obscure tournaments.

The field was 191 players. I started out playing pretty aggressively
and was chip leader at my table by the first break. Not long after the
break we were down to the last four tables. I called a guy's all in (he
was pretty short stacked) with A-Q suited. He had pocket sixes for a
coin flip situation. I flopped a queen, but the guy pulled a six on the
river. Doh! This hurt, as the blinds were quickly going up and I was
moved to a different table. I couldn't catch any cards and was really
getting low in chips. Fortunately I made it to the final two tables and
managed to double up against the guy who I had lost to earlier,
knocking him out of the tournament. Next thing you know the blinds were
8000/16000 and I had to make a move as I barely had enough to cover the
big blind which was the next hand. I looked at an A-7 offsuit and went
all in with TWO callers. Shoot! One of my callers was also all-in with
the same hand and the other guy had and 8-4 from the big blind. The
flop came down 9-4-6 with blanks on the turn and the river. Knocked out
by a pair of fours. Oh well, the upside of this was a 10th place finish
and my buy-in plus $20! Wheeeeeee! Seriously though, I am thrilled with
my results as I regained some confidence after my less than stellar
results online.

The rest of the weekend proved to be relaxing,
but not profitable since I decided to play blackjack in preparation for
an upcoming tournament (more details to follow). I could not get
anything going on the 21 tables and really should have just stuck to
poker! Lesson learned. If winning in poker, stick with it and ride the
wave!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

San Manuel Trip Report

Filed under: Trip Reports, Casinos & Card Rooms

My trip report from San Manuel is a bit dated, as I was there almost a month ago, but this is the first free day I've had! I went to play blackjack with a friend/mentor, but I was also hoping to win a chance in the "money machine" from a promotion called Grab the Green. (Much to the chagrin of my friend who thinks this stuff is a waste of time and I'm silly.) Unfortunately, I didn't win the drawing, but I did leave San Manuel a winner.....barely.

One of the hardest things about gambling is putting in serious floor time and getting little to no value for your time. For example, driving two hours to a casino only to play for eight + hours and win a measly c-note. Sure, it's better than losing, but when you factor in gas, time spent, quality of life (i.e. smoke filled casino with a rather unpleasant clientele), it makes for a miserable drive home at 5 a.m.

Here's what happened in a nutshell.

The conditions were NOT good for an advantage blackjack player. There
were few tables open that used a shoe rather than an automatic
shuffler. (For all you blackjack novices out there, avoid the
auto-shufflers like the plague!) The twelve tables that did play from a
shoe were jammed with gamblers looking to win enough dough for a carton
of Winstons. Aside from the huge crowds there was little action in the
way of table limits. Most people were betting the minimums which made
it harder for me to blend with my bets fluctuating up to 500 +. So keep
this in mind when I tell you I lost almost 5K in the first two hours.
Ouch. The rest of the trip was spent fighting my way back to even. I
actually made $120. Wheeeee! Unfortunately this is a common scenario in
a blackjack player's life. Experience and simulations tell me that over
time I WILL win, but it takes a lot of time and money. Hence my
crossover to poker.... Speaking of poker, I was so ticked about the
blackjack that I didn't even check out the poker room, but my guess is
the action is probably somewhat dicey. San Manuel is a decent Indian
casino, but really more for the hardcore gambler. I imagine a
moderately good poker player could make a little money there, but I
doubt there would be enough action to make it worthwhile. I could be
wrong..... Guess I'm a little salty towards S.M. Time for the ponies.
Check back for a report on my family trip to the racetrack.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erica's World Series Recap

Filed under: Trip Reports, Women & Poker, Casinos & Card Rooms

Well, the past two weeks have been crazier than Tom Cruise, but I'm back! I have a lot to recap from my San Manuel experience to my two trips to Vegas. Rather than go in chronological order, I'll begin with something a little more recent. (OK, I really just need vent about something!)

I generally try not to blame my poker losses on bad beats. Unfortunately, they happen all the time - it's just a part of the game. (In fact, after my most recent "bad beat" I was waxing poetic with Michael "Grinder" Mizrachi, who told me just to move on. That's all you can do. But I'm getting ahead of myself!)

So here's the scenario. I'm playing a WSOP tournament. While it's just a little thousand dollar buy in, it's still a bracelet event with some huge competition (i.e., my friend and mentor Marcel Luske was just a table away). After about a half an hour without much action from me (I was playing pretty tight) I did have a relatively good read on the rest of the table. There was one other woman at the table who was fairly aggressive and was getting some good cards. She quickly became the chip leader and was stealing a lot of pots with her big stack. The blinds were going up and I was getting low in chips. (Earlier I lost about 1/2 my stack with pocket queens against this chick, who I'm fairly certain had aces.) Anyhoo, I'm on the button with queens again. The guy to my left had only 250 or so left in chips and moves all in. I put him on ace-rag. Three guys after him fold then the action is on the aggressive chick who's been somewhat bullying everyone with the big stack (as to be expected). She raises to 800. I, at this point, believe she has a middle pair, maybe ace-jack, and she's just trying to keep everyone behind her from calling. This works, as everyone folds, but I, of course call with my queens. (This basically puts me all in.) The cards are flipped over and the guy to my LEFT actually has ace-jack and she has jacks. OK, I'm ahead pre-flop. Flop comes down ace-blank-blank, with two clubs on the board. The guy to my left is now beating me, but I'm still ahead of the chick which is more important since it's the bigger side pot. The turn is a club. The flippin' river is a club. She catches runner-runner club for the flush knocking both me and the other guy out! WAAAAAAAAA!

I still feel I made the right call, so..... Whatever! Unfortunately, bad beats are part of the game. As "Grinder" said, "move on"! OK, I guess I've moved on from this one, but the next bad beat is surely around the corner at the Hustler's Grand Slam! Stay tuned!

<p style="margin: 0in 0in both ends in Vegas. Meeting and greeting (OK, it's really shmoozin' and boozin') at night and playing cards during the day! So I returned from Sin City with a plethora of stories to recount, but alas, I am leaving for the airport in just a few short hours. Yep, you guessed it... back to Las Vegas! I have a last minute photo shoot for a new poker venture which I will describe when I return (have to sign the paperwork first) and one more World Series of Poker event that I simply must play and win! It's a thousand dollar buy-in event tomorrow that would yield not only a WSOP bracelet, but a pretty hefty payday also. This is my last stab at the 2005 World Series! Send me some positive vibes and I will surely recap what will hopefully be a winning tournament!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Viva Las Vegas

Filed under: Trip Reports, Women & Poker, World Series of Poker
After a rather disappointing fireworks display at the beach in LA (thanks to the darn marine layer) I'm off to light it up in Vegas. My flight leaves early tomorrow, so I'll get there just in time to have lunch with one of my favorite professional female poker players. Stay tuned to find out who she is, why she loves poker and how she got to be oh so good! Back to Los Angeles on Thursday with sordid details of WSOP and more!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Under the Big (Poker) Tent

Filed under: Trip Reports, Casinos & Card Rooms, Texas Holdem, Business
Cleveland Embraces Texas Hold 'Em for Charity

Ask somebody to name the top five gambling cities in the U.S., and you're likely to hear Las Vegas, New Orleans, Atlantic City, Niagara Falls, and maybe Detroit. Cleveland is nowhere on that list. Indeed, the Lake Erie town, known for stodgy industries like banking and bio-tech, is probably not what you'd call Poker Central.

Perhaps that's why so many in the town are skeptical about placing a giant, 20,000-square-foot public poker tent in middle of a struggling Cleveland entertainment district. The Flats, a low-lying plain surrounding the mouth of the Cuyahoga river, was once the pride of the town, encrusted with thriving night clubs and famous micro-breweries. Today, it's home to a few struggling restaurants with lengthy leases, and naturally, a strip joint.

The skeptics are asking, "What is a poker tent going to do for the Flats?"

The answer, from Jacobs Investments, who owns the property where the tent resides, is to bring legalized gambling institutions to the city. Right now, the football-field-sized tent would be illegal if it weren't for its non-profit, all-charity nature. The state of Ohio permits gambling only for charitable purposes, and Jacobs Investments is taking the legal loop-hole to the extreme, doing the gambling, and the charity, on a grand scale. This ain't your mother's Catholic Vegas tent.

Finally, a Place to Play Poker

The tent opened Thursday evening, June 16. A few hundred anxious poker players waited in line for the opening, ready to fork over fifteen bucks an hour to participate in Texas Hold 'Em tournaments. Proceeds benefit charities like the Cleveland Police Athletic League, which provides athletic activities for children in the city. Charities like PAL must operate the games in order to pocket the gains, and not everybody is convinced those gains will be all that great. But for the Police Athletic League, the tent couldn't have been set up at a better time. PAL recently lost their primary funding source, and they're hoping the poker operation will help them cash in.

The tent is staffed entirely by volunteer dealers and concession vendors, so don't count on any Vegas-calibre dealing. But, to many players, live poker beats their only other choice--online poker--hands down. Of course, competitive, face-to-face poker and good-natured charity, the two chief arguments in support of the new Hold 'Em operation, aren't enough to satisfy the naysayers.

Not Everybody is a Poker Fan

Some people think spending money to play poker is a rip-off. Apparently, they've never played real poker, where a pre-requisite of each round is putting money in the pot, and the penalty for poor play is--you guessed it--losing money. Then, there's civic opposition to gambling. Some folks introducing gambling to the Flats just takes it from one form of slum to another, contending, "A bad economy is an open door to compromise."

Still, if you drive three hours from Cleveland to Detroit and play table games at one of Detroit's several casinos, you're giving your money to Donald Trump and the like. If you play poker in Cleveland, you're giving it to the Police Athletic League, so I suppose things could be worse. Deal those cards and have fun! This could end up being the coolest poker venue in the world, if Cleveland plays its cards right.

I took out $100 and sat down at Pai Gow...a new bad habit that came from left field. I was down $50, but after losing $60 earlier, and a much greater amount on Saturday of proportions I can not tell my friends about, I thought I'd better stop. But that voice in your head that talks to you, please tell me you hear it too, kept asking me why I wasn't playing poker. I was going to leave but voicey reminded me that this is why I came to Vegas. So, I walked over with my fifsky and sat down. I played tight for maybe ten hands, and then I just started winning. And winning. And winning. So, I became the big money for the next five hours or so and left with nearly $300. The big excitement was getting a $96 High Hand bonus with four sixes. Thanks to Bob, the teacher from Maine on my right, I was looking out for it.

So, get on over to the Plaza for their High Hand Bonuses, which as of last night were up to $500ish. And if you're a tourney hound, they have three tournaments a day. One at 12 noon, 7 p.m., and the last one at midnight. I'll find out what the entry fees are as it slipped my notes last night at 3 a.m.. Jeff, the tournament director said the 50k game was still on for today...at noon PST. So, I better get over there.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
